Thoracic Surgery

Thoracic surgery focuses on diseases of the thorax (chest), including lung disease and other conditions.

Esophagus

Muscular tube that connects the mouth to the stomach.

Nodule

A small mass of cells that form a lesion.

Endoscope

An illuminated optic instrument inserted through an incision.

Endoscopic Mucosal Resection (EMR)

Definition/Overview

A procedure performed to remove a small, polyp-like nodule on the esophagus.

Procedure

The nodule is injected with a solution that will decrease the bleeding after it is removed. The solution causes a blister to form under the nodule that allows the surgeon to remove it without damaging the rest of the esophagus.

EMR is performed using a small cap with a small wire loop that fits on the end of an endoscope. The nodule is suctioned into the cap and the wire loop is closed. The nodule is cauterized so that the tissue can be examined under a microscope. Additional resections may be performed as necessary to remove additional diseased tissue.
